SailLanka Voyage- A quest by Jeremy Bolling

They are sailing around Sri Lanka and made a stop at Kalpitiya! sailors had to say.
.
Rob’s experience today

“An early start as the forecast predicted storms in the afternoon. After a knock on the door at 6 it was time to leave the paradise of Bay Reef Resort. Just time for a quick breakfast of Mars Bars and bananas we were ready to leave. A steady breeze from the North East made the perfect start. The winds were shifting all morning and trying to push us off shore. We decided to tack back to land hugging the shore all the way around. Once the wind shifted to North West it was a little choppy away from shore but with Jeremy at the helm any sailor would have felt comfortable. As we rounded the headland we were met by the owner of Kitesurfing Lanka flying along side us on his kite board. The beaching point was in sight and we beached at yet another idyllic setting in Kalpitiya.”
.

Now over to Jeremy

“As mentioned by Rob, with the sweet taste of Mars Bars in the mouth at 6:30 in the morning ,we came to the beach & started sailing off at 7:10. To try & get to Kalpitiya 11nm away before the high winds & rough seas predicted for the afternoon. We sailed on a wind shift between NE & NW and came into Kalpitiya in about 10kts of wind & an increase in the sea chop. From out at sea we reached into shore towards our new navigational device which is the sun reflecting off the iPad screen. No need to switch it on and load the ‘app for that.’ We had a welcome greeting from our friend Dilsiri of Kitesurfing Lanka who came along flying with his kite out to meet us.

Kitesurfing Okanda - 30 KMS from Arugam Bay

This place is heaven for me. You kite is raw nature. Its jungle all around. The rock formations make way for some great barrels for surfers and kitesurfer. The winds picked to plus 25 knots and what a load of fun. Thanks Andy Carruthers for the pictures (www.saltimages.com.au)

Biking along the Kalu Ganga!

We didnt expect to have so much fun (and drama). The scenery was breathtaking, no cars - just cycling along the banks of the Kalu Ganga in Kaluthara, Sri Lanka.

Had a bit of drama when the chain broke. We had to improvise tools to make it (temporarily) but all in all loads of fun. When there's no wind, waves and the water is to murky for diving; why not just go cycling!

Conquered - Devil's Staircase on a Bike!

We came across a post about a jeep trail that led to 'Devil's Staircase' a few months ago. Being fans of more environmentally friendly modes of transport we made our minds to conquer this on our bicycles. Thus the adventure began. Our equipment for the day included;

A 8 year old Giant Rock 4000 with worn out tires (note no suspension), A 6 year old Specialized Hardrock Mountain Bike with Front Shocks, 2 Helmets, Two camel packs with about 3 liters of water, Some 'Pani Kaju', Biscuits and Wallet.

Trip began after the previous day's climb up Kirigalpotha (thanks Heminda, the climb was epic, you didnt however warn about the leopards!). 6 AM breakfast at the best place in Ohiya, cycle up (in the cold) along the Hortain Plains road...What amazing scenary...Directions were quite easy thanks to the website that gave the information about this route. A few hours climbing and decending and your arms hurt (especially if you have no shocks on your bike). The last bit of the journey is all downhill on rough terrain. Epic and not for the faint hearted. Whole trip to Kalupahana would be about 4 hours and approximately 30 KMs. Highly recommended.
