Kitesurfing Escapades - 16th & 17th August

Most of you City Dwellers missed out again. Kitesurfing was a blast this weekend. Downwinders at Sunset, Camping under the full moon....and and and...The kiteboard company North AKA GS Lanka had a company outing this weekend at same venue. Fun to see the employees playing with the stuff they made...

For those who were not aware, yes, Kites are made in Sri Lanka! Few more weeks of wind to enjoy, must make the most of it. Cant wait for the weekend. Enjoy the pics.

Kitesurfing - How they get hooked (Part1)

Thought it might be interesting to see how fellow Lankan kitesurfers got into the sport. We all know how Mads from Hikka got hooked. Lets look at another, me!

Was in the year 2007 when my friend Previne asked me to come with for a Kitesurfing Camp. Knowing what the sport was, my answer was a simple big fat YES! Later on did we realize how expensive it was for a local. We however sacrificed the remainder of our months earnings and headed for the camp.

The camp itself was amazing with loads of hardcore kitesurfers. Unfortunately for Previne and I, the closest we got (apart from watching the kitesurfers in the lagoon and sea)was to have a go at the trainers kites and later a short session on a large 13M kite (just body dragging).

We were a bit disspointed as we did'nt quite become kitesurfers at the end of camp however, it did give impetus to pursue learning the sport. Months after the camp, I decided to buy my gear and thereafter start on my lessons (newcomers to the sport, always to the opposite, do the lessons and then buy gear!).

As some of you are aware, Mischi was my coach, my guru. Took me a couple of weeks to actually get on the board and start surfing. Actually it took me weeks plus a few sessions with the doctor (after suffering from heat stroke and dehydration!), hours spend on the hot sand untangling lines and a couple of near death experiences!

Months after, I continue to learn and believe I have a long way more to go to reach the standards of the kites Previne and I first saw in 2007. For those who want to try it out, do take the plunge, just do it, you live only once and life is about how you live and experience it!

Question - What made you get hooked?
Pretty hard to explain. Something in the lines like I always wanted to fly and surf...kitesurfing combined both...the joy of harnessing the raw power of nature to propel one's self through water and air...highly addictive.

The Controversial MIA and Kitesurfing!

For those who are not aware, MIA is a Sri Lankan (?) rapper who is causing a bit of a stir in the scene. No she is'nt the person who is surfing, she's the one singing the song! Catchy music goes nice with the clip ...

Hikka beach fest? Nah, I'd rather be Kitesurfing!

I guess we did find favour in Gods eyes, because after an extremely still Saturday, Sunday was nice and windy - quite ok for a 13 plus square metre kite up in XXX. The day saw quite a few Lankans taking up the sport including Mihiri who might be the first Lankan female Kitesurfer (anyone wants to beat her to it? haha).

Chunky aka Chanaka and Julian got on to the board and were racing away. Harin? Well a bit more to progress for him - maybe by next week. Anyone tempted to join? Let us know....

Please God just a bit of Wind tomorrow - Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka

  • As you may now be aware, without wind, there will be not kitesurfing. With almost suicidal amounts of wind last weekend in XXX, this Saturday (2nd of August) the wind is none existent. No kitesurfing at all today. We are all on our knees tonight, praying, that there would be a bit of wind tomorrow. The weather forecasts predict very moderate wind conditions but even that could change - so its up to the weather god...
  • I've seen a number of people get utterly dissapointed when they were not able to get a session due to low wind conditions. This is especially the case with newcomers to the sport. Soo bitter are they that they even take it on the people who instruct. One thing that you need to realize is that, kitesurfing solely depends on wind conditions and if you are doing it in the sea, the conditions in the sea. No one can predict nature 100 percent. If the conditions are'nt the best for kitesurfing, well, you've got to live with it...
  • Maybe thats the beauty of the sport, you tend to appreciate nature and its beauty. Its a scarce resource, even the wind, when its there, we need to use it to the maximum, enjoy it to the fullest.
  • So, if you do intend on learning kitesurfing in Sri Lanka or anywhere in the world, remember, you need to be patient. You cannot learn the sport in a hurry...
  • With that, I've got to go pray....please god let there be wind tomorrow.
