Kite Community. Make a Change.

Kitesurf Lanka is involved with a very worthwhile local community project providing assistance and financial help to the local Kindergarten school.

The school has been gifted land and already has a small building that provides the early education of approximately fifty local boys and girls. Whilst the building has four walls and a roof it requires further development for it to reach its full potential. The school does not have its own toilet facilities and currently has access to one toilet shared by boys and girls, all fifty of them! The classroom floor is sand based and would benefit from a concrete screed eliminating the constant harassment of sand flies and ants! The classroom furniture is old and tired and does not provide seating and an adequate working area for all children! Whilst it may not be essential in this part of the world there is no electrical supply installed for lighting! Nor is there access to a supply of water! Essential for all the mishaps associated with working with young children. Perhaps most importantly the school lacks educational resources, pencils, paper, text books, toys etc! The essential tools to stimulate and maximize the potential of teaching and learning!

I’d like to think that the clients of Kitesurf Lanka are more than just visitors to this community. In fact for many of us who will undoubtedly return are essentially joining the community in Kalpitiya. This is a totally worthwhile non-profit making community project and as honorary community members we have the means, time and energy to make a big difference. You can help in so many ways to contribute to the initial education of local children! They are young, friendly, enthusiastic learners and as you drive back and forth to the lagoon to enjoy our fortunate lifestyles and hobby, I would ask that you count how many young, curious happy faces you pass by. They need your help, however small, monetary or otherwise you can make a difference.

Epic Kite Trips with Kitesurfing Lanka

Kitesurf Lanka Downwinder!

Once the boat was loaded with all our gear, food and refreshments for the day the trip commenced with a short one hour boat ride North! Passing local fisherman and remote coastal villages everyone enjoyed the scenery with an increasing sense of anticipation of what the day had in store.

We set up on a small spit of land with the local fisherman looking on with friendly curiosity! The wind was blowing strong and constant and we began the downwind leg on smooth glassy water tempting everyone to extend their skills!

When the inevitable wipe outs occurred the boat was always around to provide assistance if required. Between the islands the small channels provided some variety in the water conditions, changing from flat to choppy conditions!

Reaching our destination we stopped to enjoy a well prepared lunch before getting back on the water for an afternoon of fun. With the local fisherman encouraging us we performed for them with increasing cheers and laughter when we failed to land a jump or trick. Exhausted from three hours of perfect wind and flat conditions we packed up for the ride back upwind stoked with the days events.

Being a Scotsman I queried the cost of this trip (70 Euros) but in hindsight it is perhaps the expense and experience I have had kiting to date. I would recommend this trip to anyone. The scenery, kiting, local people and service was simply awesome! Enjoy

Kitesurfing Lanka Season Opener!

It’s been 15 days since we started our epic journey at Kitesurfing Lanka. Quitting the Corporate Sector to pursue what we were made for was totally worth it. We feel we are rocking it and everyone is having a great time in Kalpitiya.

Our ethos is simple. Do to others as you would like someone to do for you. Keep it simple, keep it friendly, genuine care and concern that everyone would have a very special experience with us.

Chef Ranjith continues to make some awesome dishes. Clywd and Thilak do a great job with welcoming the guest and ensuring the camp runs smoothly. Our instructors work hard with dedication. Our boatman Suresh constantly keeps an eye on our riders always ready to rev up the engine to rush for a rescue. What a great team we have had so far.

We remember our first guests, Stefan from the KTA, Wendy and Peter from Holland, Sandra & Ollie, Marcus from the UAE, Aurellie and Charles from France who were so determined to ride on the board, Vivien, David, Sylvie and the brother and sister duo Alan and Jess from Kenya, the Ukrainian and Russian Crew headed by Stefan and Dina….what wonderful company!

A lot of positive feedback has been received. Our camp works well. A few things we need to improve on and this we will act on fast. Our first kite trip which ended last week was a life changing experience for all those who took part.

As the season progresses Kitesurfing Lanka will continue to share in the wonderful experience of Kiting in Paradise, that’s Kiting in Sri Lanka.

Surprise surprise, Kitesurfing Lanka is Pretty Rad!

The wind has definitely started in Sri Lanka.

I'm kiting every day in the Kalpitiya lagoon, the spot is awesome and never crowded. The water is glassy flat and the most of the people are beginner which all stay upwind of the best wakestyle spots.

 

Few days ago the north team arrived wt Tom Court, Tom Hebert and Thomas Paris. The guysare rocking the lagoon wt all the new 2013 equipment, since it is all produced over here is the cheapest way to test... and i would say one of the spots that gives u all the opportunities to the all kites on one spot. Waves, flat water, choppy.. u name it Sri Lanka has it.

We did already to kitetrips wt boats to some smaller islands just a few km downwind of the lagoon. Kitesurfinglanka is offering those trips. U can't really do it alone because u need a license to go passed the military zone and only a few boats are aloud to cross this area.

The trips are awesome, kiters should be able to go toeside, so u can actually do a long trip. The beginners take much longer and can do a shorter version of the trip. They start to build some shelters for lunchtime, which is served on the beach, and some cover for the 2day trips.

I can highly recommend the trips, is all about flat water riding, enjoying the longest stretch of sandbars, beaches and small fisher villages wt kids running around and cheering u up to do some big airs in front of them.

The trip starts wt a 1h boatride down the Kalpitiya lagoon which connects wt the Puttalam lagoon. There are already plenty of spots on the way to the first island, but the best spots just start from there. Then it's about a 2h downwind trip all the way to the second island and ending up at a wavespot, the waves can be nice down here, depending on the swell.

Sri Lanka is the future of kiteboarding... this spot will grow very fast and big. So come and enjoy it as long as the local style will last, before the big player come in and destroy it all.

I can already say a very big thank u to Dilsiri and Leo and theire team for letting me stay in the newly opened kitesurfing Lanka camp. Recommended to everyone who is seeking some very relaxed kiteboarding holidays in a big family style atmosphere, food is great and the staff are really friendly... if u have a chance try to beat Tilak at Carome,

I only have a few days left now till i head to Bangkok for 2night and then off to China for the next KTA tourstop.
